This week on Radio Civil Liberties: The historic California Supreme Court victory overturning the state’s ban on marriages of lesbian and gay couples was applauded this week by New York Civil Liberties Union. In a 4-3 decision, drafted by Chief Justice Ronald George, the court ruled: "In light of the fundamental nature of the substantive rights embodied in the right to marry - and their central importance to an individual's opportunity to live a happy, meaningful, and satisfying life as a full member of society - the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all individuals and couples, without regard to their sexual orientation." Our first segment comes from NPR Radio Affiliate KPCC (89.3 FM in southern California) where we hear brief remarks from Clare Pastore, Of Counsel for the ACLU of Southern California, and David Cruz, USC Professor of Law (Complete interview is here). Followed by a brief report from Democracy Now's Amy Goodman and followed-up with remarks-in their entirety from San Fransisco Mayor Gavin Newsome who praised many organizations, including the ACLU in his remarks following the historic decision.
